Kumari Ghar: Heart of Kathmandu
During 1757 in ruling period of King Jaya Prakash Malla, the Kumari Ghar was built within the walls of Basantapur Durbar Square Palace is residence of Living Goddess Kumari. This was built as remorseful act by King to overcome his guilt toward particular sexual indiscretion girl. The place is well known for its magnificent art of carving and divine living.
Why Kumari Ghar is a magnificent sight
The Kumari Ghar is a three-story old style building with rich and detail wood-carving which symbolize gods. The building Overlooking the south side of Durbar square. The residing Goddess sometimes appears windows. But the Goddess does sits on her thrown in morning till noon to their devotees.
Tourists are allowed to enter the courtyard, but nor further more access is permitted neither photograph Kumari.
The Goddess Kumari
The Kumari is a young girl who is reincarnation of Goddess Durga. It the belief among hindu and Nepalese Buddhist devotee during middle century.
There are 11 kumari across Nepal but most significant kumari is from Kathmandu itself. And kumari selected through Tibetan Lamas procedure who high believe in re-incarnation. Choosen from little girl from Shakya Clan who believed to be descendent of Lord Buddha which are purest of its kind. A girl must possess natural perfection, fierceness and symbolically significant attribute to be a Kumari and her compatibility is tested through their star sign.
A girl must go through severe test to be Kumari later move her to Kumari Ghar and is worshipped as a God.
The Kumari’s reign comes to an end when her menstruates or slight injury on her body. The girl reverts to mortal fame and seeks for her replacement begins. She is given a modest state pension, and it is believed marrying former Kumari will die young.
Festivals
The major festival for the Kumari is Indra Jaatra, a celebrated during late August or early September. The festival continues for eight days and Kumari is carried around the Old Kathmandu in its own in a chariot for four day of the festival.
Traditionally, blessing from Kumari is considered as lucky. Kumari blessing is also required while throning the King’s is ceremony in past.
